Abena Joan Brown Performing Arts Summer Enrichment Program
Abena Joan Brown was one of the most influential figures in Chicago’s Black arts movement and is widely regarded as a pioneering force in African American theater.
She co-founded ETA Creative Arts Foundation in 1969 alongside Okoro Harold Johnson, Al Johnson, and Archie Weston Sr. Originally established as the Ebony Talent Agency (ETA), the organization evolved into a cultural institution dedicated to training, performance, and artistic development for Black artists on Chicago’s South Side.
Brown’s vision extended beyond producing theater. She believed that African American communities needed institutions that nurtured artists, preserved Black culture, and provided opportunities for children, youth, and adults to develop their creative talents. Under her leadership, ETA grew from a talent agency into one of Chicago’s most significant Black cultural organizations, offering theater productions, arts education, galleries, music, dance, and community programming.
Known as the “mother of Chicago’s Black arts community,” Brown mentored generations of actors, playwrights, directors, educators, and cultural leaders. Her influence extended far beyond ETA, helping shape Chicago’s Black theater ecosystem and advocating for African American arts nationally.
For ETA Creative Arts Foundation, Abena Joan Brown was not simply a founder—she was the visionary architect of an institution dedicated to ensuring that Black artists could train, create, perform, and tell their own stories in their own voices. Her work established a foundation that continues to serve Chicago more than five decades later.
